At the behest of His Excellency the President of the Tunisian Republic, Mr. Samir Obaid, Minister of Trade and Export Development, headed the Tunisian delegation participating in the proceedings of the Ministerial Meeting of Coordinators for the Follow-up of the Outcomes of the 4th Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), hosted in Changsha, China, from June 10 to 12, 2025.

Tunisian Delegation Leads by Minister of Trade

In his address, the Minister emphasized Tunisia’s commitment to actively contributing to the China-Africa Cooperation Forum as a platform for peace, stability, and comprehensive development amid a global context marked by geopolitical tensions, climate challenges, and economic instability. He reiterated Tunisia’s steadfast dedication to international and multilateral cooperation and solidarity, as well as its readiness to continue sharing its expertise with sister African nations.

Strengthening Multilateralism and Development Partnerships

In his address, the Minister emphasized Tunisia’s commitment to actively contributing to the China-Africa Cooperation Forum as a platform for peace, stability, and comprehensive development. He highlighted the importance of this cooperation amid a global context marked by geopolitical tensions, climate challenges, and economic instability. Tunisia reaffirmed its dedication to international solidarity and readiness to share expertise with African nations.

Call for Enhanced Economic and Trade Cooperation

The Minister urged China, as a strategic partner, to increase investments in key development projects—particularly in infrastructure and transportation. He also advocated for preferential trade measures to facilitate African exports, including Tunisian olive oil, to the Chinese market, while promoting win-win partnerships.

Minister Obaid Concludes with Strong Call for Multilateral Action

In his closing remarks, H.E. Mr. Samir Obaid, Tunisia’s Minister of Trade and Export Development, delivered a powerful message emphasizing that the shared commitment to multilateral principles and the UN Charter requires African nations and China to intensify their joint efforts. He stressed this partnership must actively promote these fundamental values in service of global peace and justice.

Boosting Cultural and Tourism Exchanges in 2026

With 2026 declared the Year of China-Africa Cultural Exchanges, Tunisia expressed eagerness to enhance cultural ties. The Minister proposed strengthening tourism cooperation through improved air connectivity between China and African capitals, encouraging Chinese tourists to visit Africa, and promoting African destinations in Chinese media.

Adoption of the Changsha Declaration for Global South Solidarity

At the conclusion of the meeting, African nations and China adopted the “Changsha Declaration on China-Africa Cooperation to Safeguard the Global South.” The document reaffirmed commitments to:

Advocate for a fairer, more open global trade system.

Strengthen China-Africa partnerships.

Uphold solidarity among Global South nations.

Reject unilateralism and protectionism.
